About ACT
The Action Committee for Transit has a vision of better communities and better transit. We believe fundamental changes are needed in transportation and land use policies to give the people of Montgomery County the quality of life we deserve. Our broad membership and active volunteers give us the ability to make the voice of transit riders – and those who would like to ride transit if it were more available – heard in Rockville, Annapolis, and Washington DC. At the same time, we continue to educate the public about the need for transit. Our leadership is elected annually by our members, and we are sustained financially by the members. Strategic objectives:
ACT successfully accomplished, through a 30-year struggle, the strategic objective for which it was founded: to get the Purple Line light rail approved, funded, and under construction. We now pursue these policy objectives as the next steps toward our goal of a transit-oriented county:
● All-day, seven-day, two-way train service on the MARC Brunswick Line
● County and state road design policies that make walking and cycling safe and convenient throughout the county
● Frequent Ride-On bus service, prioritized over capital projects that do not add frequency
● Land use reform that prioritizes transit-oriented development, especially housing.
● Stop wasteful and damaging highway expansion projects.
Key responsibilities:
● Coordinate volunteer outreach to build support for transit and recruit new members to ACT
● Staff monthly membership meetings (in person) and board meetings (virtual)
● Schedule, arrange, and publicize events and meetings
● Provide staff support to volunteer lobbying of state & county officials
● Maintain membership & supporter database
● Manage outgoing communications, including 2-4 email blasts per month, quarterly printed newsletter, annual dues renewal notices, and occasional press releases
● Reply to incoming communications or refer to appropriate volunteer leadership
● Follow-up with prospective members & volunteers to encourage engagement
Qualifications:
● High degree of motivation and ability to work independently
● Demonstrated commitment to our vision of better transit and better communities
● Excellent listening, oral, and written communication skills
● Attention to detail
● Basic computer literacy and ability to learn new software. Experience with Nationbuilder is a plus, but not required.
● Availability to work at ACT and community events on nights and weekends
● Willingness to travel in Montgomery County. Travel may not always be within walking distance of the Red Line.
● Students are encouraged to apply. Strong preference for students with at least two years before they complete their programs and look for a full-time job.
Compensation and hours:
Estimated time commitment is 20 hours per week. Schedule is flexible, except for the monthly membership and board meetings which are on Tuesday nights. Pay will be $20 per hour, plus expenses.
