Montgomery County’s Leaders: Taking the Transit Challenge

Press release issued June 10, 2019

June 10 - June 16, members of the Montgomery County Council and the Planning Board are leaving their cars in “park” and using only public transit (bus, Metro, train) or active transportation (bike, walking, scooter, etc.) Using social media, they will share their experiences of the strengths and weaknesses of Montgomery County’s non-car transportation systems (TW/FB: #TransitChallenge). That may mean safe, convenient, on-time service and friendly conversations with fellow travelers. It may also mean buses stuck in the same lanes as cars, difficulties getting from the bus/Metro stop to their destination, and walking and bicycling on big roads where people drive fast. The Transit Challenge is an opportunity to connect with Montgomery County residents who use transit, walking, and biking to get around the county.

Anyone can participate simply by committing to try to use only public transit and walking/biking etc. during June 10-16, but ACT is especially pleased to report these leaders’ commitments: County Councilmembers Gabe Albornoz (At-Large), Andrew Friedson (D-1), Evan Glass (At-Large), Will Jawando (At-Large), and Hans Riemer (At-Large). Planning Board Chair Casey Anderson and Planning Board Members Natali Fani-Gonzalez and Tina Patterson.

They are joined by Takoma Park Councilmember Kacy Kostiuk (Ward 3) who previously took the Transit Challenge in March
