Detailed Responses - County Executive

Question 1

Do you support the Locally Preferred Alternative selected by Gov. O'Malley for the Purple Line, including an at-grade light rail line with a trail alongside it on the Georgetown Branch right of way between Bethesda and Silver Spring?

Isiah Leggett (D) Yes.

Daniel Vovak (R) Yes, I support Governor O'Malley's transit plan and hope that former Governor Bob Ehrlich will make the Purple Line a funding priority. I will push both candidates to place the priority of transit over roads.

Question 2

Which is a higher priority: maintaining Ride-On Service or building the $80 million parking garage in Bethesda?

Isiah Leggett (D) Maintaining ride-on service is a higher priority.

Daniel Vovak (R) Maintaining Ride-On Service is my priority.

Question 3

Do you approve or disapprove of County traffic engineers' current policy of giving equal priority on the road to autos that carry a few people and buses that carry many people?

Isiah Leggett (D) I disapprove. My policy is to favor transit over roads.

Daniel Vovak (R) I support systems that give preference to buses and trains.

Question 4

Should any money be spent on increasing highway capacity associated with the Great Seneca Science Corridor Master Plan before a light rail Corridor Cities Transitway from Shady Grove to Clarksburg is fully funded for construction?

Isiah Leggett (D) Yes. The recently adopted master plan appropriately stages development to be dependent on construction of the Corridor Cities Transitway. To completely ignore a complementary need for any roads would be too restrictive and inconsistent with the master plan.

Daniel Vovak (R) No.

Question 5

Should approval of Transit-Oriented Development near Metro stations be tied to the movement of cars?

Isiah Leggett (D) No, it should be tied to the movement of people. I have strongly advocated for Transit Oriented Development as a smart growth alternative for our future.

Daniel Vovak (R) No.
